BREAKING: Otisville Prison Camp Closing and Inmates Sent Home Over Virus

With many prisoners and wardens sick with the coronavirus, the minimum security prison camp in Otisville, New York, is closing for at least a month.

Rabbi Moshe Margareten, the head of the Tzeddek Association which advocates for prisoners, said that prisoners were notified that they will be furloughed for 30 days. After a month, the prison will decided with whether to extend it for another 30 days. though they’ll have to first quarantine for 14 days in prison.

The move comes as most inmates and guards have symptoms of the coronavirus. All prisoners will need to first quarantine in prison for two weeks before being allowed home.

The closure only affects the minimum security prison known as the camp, not the medium security prison also located in the same town.

One of the prisoners due to be released is Dean Skelos, the former majority leader of the state Senate. He was convicted of pressuring companies with business before the state to give his adopted son a job.

Another is Michael Cohen, the former personal attorney of President Trump who turned on him and is serving a three-year sentence for money laundering. Following the furlough he will be allowed to complete his sentence at home.
