dayan-menachem-gelleyBritish Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has announced that Dayan Menachem Gelley has been formally appointed as rosh of the London Bais Din, a position not held since it was vacated following the retirement of Rosh Bais Din Emeritus Rav Chanoch Ehrentreu in January 2007.

Since that time, Dayan Gelley has held the position of ‘Senior Dayan,’ fulfilling many of the functions and responsibilities of the Rosh Bais Din, but has now been appointed by Chief Rabbi Mirvis, who holds the title of Av Bais Din, with the full support of the President and Trustees of the United Synagogue.

Dayan Gelley was born in Gateshead and studied at Gateshead Boarding School, Sunderland Yeshiva, where his father served as Rosh Yeshiva, and Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, before moving to the Gateshead Kollel. He trained as a dayan at botei din in the United States and Israel before joining the London Bais Din in 1993.

Announcing the appointment, Chief Rabbi Mirvis said, “It is my privilege, as Chief Rabbi, to work with my Court, the world-renowned London Bais Din. I am delighted that Dayan Menachem Gelley has accepted the invitation to become Rosh Bais Din. Dayan Gelley’s impressive knowledge of Jewish law, coupled with his humanity and sensitivity, make him a worthy occupant of this significant spiritual leadership role within the Jewish world.”

Dayan Gelley commented, “I am grateful to the Chief Rabbi, my colleague Dayanim and the United Synagogue for their confidence in me with this prestigious appointment. I pray to G-d for the wisdom and strength to serve in this capacity for the best interests of the Community.”

Stephen Pack, President of the United Synagogue, said, “With more than twenty years of service and experience at the London Bais Din, the Trustees of the United Synagogue welcome this extremely important appointment which recognises the esteem in which Dayan Gelley is already held across the communities of the United Synagogue and beyond.”

  1. #3, the UK is NOT a Muslim country; England itself is by law a Christian country and the Muslim minority is small.

May Dayan Gelley be blessed with the wisdom to decide all cases fairly.

  2. Mazal tov!

    London is so confusing.

I thought Dayan Rabbi Yosroel Yaakov Lichtenshtein was the Av Beis Din of the London Beis Din. Google notifies me that he’s the head of the Federation London Beis Din, and Rabbi Padwa is the Av Beis Din of the Kadasya London Beis Din. Dayan Rabbi Gelly is now the head of the United Synagogue London Beis Din.

Really! It’s not a Muslim country? I’m sorry it was my mistake
Why don’t you move there and the weather is nice this time of the year
Especially when people are afraid to go out with Yarmulkas
    Wonder why?

  4. just read that mohammad is the top of the list in baby boys names given in England and you say that England is not Muslim. Have you been there recently?

  5. Dayan Menachem Gelley is son of Rav Zachariah Gelley, Rov of K’hal Adath Jeshurun, formerly Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Netzach Yisrael, Sunderland (may he have a refuah shelemah). The previous Rosh Beth Din, first holder of the position, was Rav Chanoch Ehrentreu, formerly Rosh Kollel of Sunderland Kollel. As the Chief Rabbi, Rav Efraim Mirvis, is Av Beth Din, but the position of Rosh Beth Din was created to acknowledge the reality that, for some years, the Chief Rabbi had been occupied with other aspects of his position and the Beth Din had been run by a leading Dayan, notably by Rav Yechezkel Abramsky.
