A Russian court sentenced Brittney Griner to 9 years after finding her guilty of cannabis possession and smuggling — despite her claims that she “made an honest mistake” and her tearful pleas for mercy. Standing in a cage reserved for defendants at the Khimki court outside Moscow, Griner remained stone-faced upon hearing the verdict.

When given a chance to speak during Thursday’s hearing, Griner, 31, with her voice quivering, acknowledged her “mistake” and pleaded for leniency. “I want the court to understand that this was an honest mistake that I made while rushing, under stress, trying to recover from COVID and just trying to get back to my team,” Griner said, referring to her packing vape cartridges in her luggage on her way to Russia in February. I know everybody keeps talking about political pawn and politics, but I hope that is far from this courtroom,” she continued. “I made an honest mistake and I hope that in your ruling, that it doesn’t end my life here.”

Minutes after the verdict was announced, the White House released a statement on behalf of President Biden condemning Griner’s sentencing. Brittney Griner stands inside a defendants’ cage during a court hearing in Khimki outside Moscow, Russia , 04 August 2022.

“Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully detaining Brittney,” the statement read. “It’s unacceptable, and I call on Russia to release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and teammates.” (NY Post)

  1. Good for her. She deserves every minute of it. She hates America. She hates our national anthem. America is racist. America hates blacks. Etc etc etc…. Now she sees what other countries are all about.

  2. Upon learning of Griner’s 9-year sentence for cannabis possession, a Biden administration official issued a statement on Thursday saying, “What have these Russians been smoking lately?”
Seconds later the Russian government put out a statement of its own saying, “We’ve only been smoking the good stuff. We know what kind of trade-offs we’re capable of extracting from ‘Uncle Joe’. Besides didn’t Uncle Joe say, prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, “It’s one thing if it’s (only) a minor incursion and then we end up having a fight about what to do and not do”? So we will likely see some minimal infighting among the Biden administration about what to do and not do with regards to this minor incursion of Griner, and then Russia will get what it seeks from its favorite uncle.”

  3. Lock them up and throw away the key, Kamala Harris, hypocritically derided the sentence. This should be the last time we politically promote a DA to VP (unless it’s the humane society)
