bus-israelEarlier this week, a chareidi woman waering a burqa on a Mehadrin bus from Yerushalayim to Haifa was thought to be was an Arab due to her suspicious dress. It soon became clear that the woman on the Egged 972 line was not an Arab with malicious intent, but rather a chareidi woman in Arab garb.

Someone on the bus who spotted the woman called the police, thinking that she posed a danger to the Jewish riders. At a stop near Mevasseret Tzion, police cars began to move toward the bus, and one of them ordered the bus to pull over.

The police ordered the driver to get off the bus, and after a brief conversation with him, they went to the back of the bus to speak with the passenger. It was then discovered that the woman is a Jew.

It has become a growing phenomenon amongst a small minority of women to sport burqas allegedly for tznius reasons.

It should be noted that respected rabbonim have castigated the practice, not only because it presents a potential danger to chareidi Yidden, but because it is not called for by halacha or the guidelines of tznius.

Thank you for writing that, ebc. we have to make sure people know that we, from yidden, stand for normal yiddshkeit, which thankfully matzav tries to convey, and not what the craziy minority tries to spread.

  2. We should not dress like a non-Jew. Especial, Non-Jews that have vowed to kill us all and wipe Israel off the face of the earth.

Simply covering the hair, elbows and down past the knees is all that is needed.

  3. Fanatics are fanatics any way you cut it. At least they are now giving us a way to differentiate them from the mainstream.

  4. To #4

No, they don’t call the police on every bus withe an arab women, but they do on an mehadrin bus – I was once on a mehadrin bus that was stopped by security on the highway, because at the front there were two sefardi looking boys who were not wearing a kipa and they were asked for there identity papers.

  5. I don’t know what respected rabonim means, but if it were godolei hador I think that’s what would have been written. I’ve also experienced seeing someone dressed like this and almost calling the police. But to say fanatic is not fair; in the story of “all for the boss,” he was considered fanatic in his time for being against mixed dancing. In our time who would even dream of going to a mixed dancing wedding???If there are people who want to dress like that, and they are not going against Halacha by wearing their little black cape what do you care? Don’t you think it fanatic when a man goes around in a black suit in the middle of the summer (I don’t have anything against this but only trying to make a point)in clothes that the goyim used to wear?
