george-w-bushIn a rare interview, former President George W. Bush says life after the presidency is “awesome” and he’s content with being out of the public eye.

In the hour-long sit down, given to the Hoover Institution and posted on YouTube, Bush says he’s trying to regain his anonymity as much as possible.

“The … person who served as a role model for me for a long time was George H. W. Bush, who famously said ‘Once you leave the stage, you stay off the stage.’ I thought long and hard about that and decided that not being on the stage was something I was comfortable with,” he said.

Bush has kept an intentionally low profile since leaving office in 2009 and has kept mum on his opinions about President Barack Obama and his policies.

“I think it’s bad for the presidency to have former presidents bloviating, opining, telling people how it ought to be done,” he said.

“I don’t want to undermine our president, whoever is president. A former president can do that and I think it’s bad for the presidency itself.”

That said, Bush says he supports Mitt Romney in November.

And as for his time in politics?

“I crawled out of the swamp and I’m not crawling back in,” he joked.

“I think striving for a legacy is a complete waste of time. A legacy will emerge with the reach of time and I’m perfectly comfortable with a couple of facts. One, I won’t be around to read it. And two, there will be objective historians who properly analyze the decisions I made.”

  1. There are three types of men in this world. Men who seek power, men who seek prestige and men who seek influence. Mr. Bush talked about his “power”.

  2. GWB we miss you seeing you in the news. This country owes a lot to this great president. So sad that so many Americans don’t see GWB for what he really was. It could take years and maybe longer for this country to begin to appreciate this great man and all that he did for this great country and frankly the whole world. Mr President we wish you all the best in your retirement.

  3. President George W. Bush was one of the best President’s in the history of the United States. He took over after the disastrous Clinton years, when Slick Willie was too busy with Monica to respond to numerous terrorist attacks against the U.S. in 1993, 1998, and 2000 that he failed to respond to. That lead up to Al Quida, seeing America doesn’t mind its terrorism under Clinton, to attack America on September 11, 2001, a mere 7 months after Clinton left office leaving America vulnerable.

Osama thought Bush was another Clinton. Why shouldn’t he have? Clinton gave Osama free reign to attack America between 1993 and 200 without any repercussions. Boy was Osama in for a surprise. Bush declared war against terror, and never gave up. And Al Quida has never again attacked American Soil under the great leadership of W.

And thank G-d George Bush invaded Iraq and removed Saddam Hussein from the world stage, sending him to the gallows that he so well deserved (and should have been placed on many years earlier.) Imagine a world today with Saddam still in office threatening world peace.

Not to mention Bush’s strong and unwavering support of Israel and the Jewish people. Something his successor, Barack Hussein Obama discarded in his new administration’s refusal to unconditionally support Israel as his predecessor George W. Bush had done for 8 years.

  4. George W. Bush has been and remained a mensch. Obama never was and is not interested in being a mensch. He doesn’t have the concept.

You write “It could take years and maybe longer for this country to begin to appreciate this great man and all that he did for this great country and frankly the whole world.”

You are right that it will take years and maybe longer for this country to… But and here comes a big one, What he did is called recession and I’m not so sure that we will ever begin to appreciate this great man and all that he did for this great country and frankly the whole world.

You write “That lead up to Al Quida, seeing America doesn’t mind its terrorism under Clinton, to attack America on September 11, 2001, a mere 7 months after Clinton left office leaving America vulnerable.

First of all from Jan 21 till Sep 11 is more then 8 and a half months not a mere 7 months.
Then in all of the Clinton years this osama wouldn’t dear attack the USA mainland.

Whether you like infatuations with the “Power” of GW Bush or you just think he is the happy sailor, he is clearly not the most esteemed president in history and his role is more of a buffer for the time periods ahead.

In truth, the Iraqi war is a controversy and will be debated in the classrooms and universitites for the time ahead. His resolve to attack the Iraqis was not countered by any conditional intrest for resolving a factual debate over the idea of whether there really were WMD’s.

His work after 911 was inspirational at first, but this is the same president who clowned around upon hearing that the whole tragedy began by reading kiddie stories to kids.

Mr. Bush was also likely our first recovering alcoholic president and it is clear his past was not the highest esteemed due to his alcoholism.
