Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind., and candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, criticized U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday for withdrawing from the 2015 Iran deal in May 2018, saying that it was “close to a true ‘art of the deal,’ ” a reference to one of the president’s books.

“Preventing the spread of nuclear weapons should remain a core tenet of our global leadership,” said Buttigieg, 37, in a speech focused on foreign policy and national security at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. “For this reason, I will rejoin our international partners and recommit the U.S. to the Iran nuclear deal.”

“Whatever its imperfections, this was perhaps as close to a true ‘art of the deal’ as it gets,” he said. “As even this administration repeatedly certified it was preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. It has helped constrain the military threat that Iran poses to Israel and Europe without leading up down a path to another Middle Eastern war. This agreement was concluded not to do Iran a favor, but because it is in our national security interest, just as a parallel policy of confronting Iran’s support for terrorism and abysmal human rights record reflects our values and security interests.”

Additionally, Buttigieg, who is running fourth in a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom/CNN poll, warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against fulfilling his campaign promise to annex parts of Judea and Samaria.

“If Prime Minister Netanyahu makes good on his threat to annex West Bank settlements, he should know that a President Buttigieg would take steps to ensure that American taxpayers won’t help foot the bill,” he declared.

Regarding the U.S.-Israel relationship, the candidate said, “The closer an ally, the more important it is that we speak truth to them. The security and survival of the democratic state of Israel has been and continues to be an essential tenet of U.S. foreign policy and is very much in our national interest, which is why neither American nor Israeli leaders should play personal politics with the security of Israel and its neighbors.

“Just as an American patriot may oppose the policies of the American president,” he continued, “a supporter of Israel may also oppose the policies of the Israeli right-wing government, especially when we see increasingly disturbing signs that the Netanyahu government is turning away from peace.”

  1. Buttgeig is an evil wicked man who sins before G-d. We must make sure this sinner never reaches the highest office in the land. His hate for Israel, G-d’s chosen Nation, is an abomination. His personal decisions shows he should not be a public person.

  2. He could promise to put men on the sun, or anything else that is impossible to achieve, since he doesn’t have a slightest chance of winning the Presidency.

  3. At least he doesn’t consider the Palestinians a close ally. He said the closer the ally, the more you speak the truth to them. America never speaks the truth to the Palestinians (except for President trump) so they cant be too close.

  4. Trump is an evil wicked man who sins before G-d. We must make sure this sinner does not get a second term in the highest office in the land. His embrace of anti-Semites, G-d’s chosen Nation, is an abomination. His personal decisions shows he should not be a public person.

  5. B”H among the Democrats running for President there is no open antisemite, unlike in England where the leader of Labor IS actually an open Jew-hater and supporter of terrorists.

That said, I don’t think Israel has any true friends among the Democrats, either. There are many advocates of “even-handedness” and “tough love”, but that’s not what Israel needs in a world full of countries actively trying to destroy it and many more countries who wish Israel would just disappear. Furthermore, popular opinions among Democrats seem to be that Mideast peace would come about if not for Israeli intransigence, Prime Minister Netanyahu is a blatant, apartheid-promoting racist, Palestinians are an oppressed minority who are entitled to the entire West Bank and Eastern Yerushalayim (including Har HaBayis), Israel’s security fences are immoral, and to make peace the onus is on Israel to make permanent, irrevocable territorial concessions without getting anything tangible in return.

I’ve voted for Democratic presidential candidates in the past, but I can’t even imagine voting for any of the current crew in 2020.

  6. I’m sure Buttigieg does not have Israel’s best interests at heart.

Even so, he is probably right that annexing parts of the West Bank is not a good idea. What security will it increase? What will it accomplish other than gain enemies? Why is it worth fighting over this issue?

Rav Shach was vehemently against these type of things.
