Canada announced on Saturday an aid package to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) worth Can$50 million (US$38 million).
Spread over two years, the agency will receive Can$40 million earmarked for “meeting the basic education, health and livelihood needs of millions of Palestinian refugees,” according to a statement from the Canadian government. In addition, Can$10 million will be used to provide “emergency life-saving assistance to more than 460,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria and Lebanon,” the statement added. T
he financial support comes as the UN body is struggling to continue its services for the Palestinian refugees after the United States cut off $300 million in funding, calling it an “irredeemably flawed operation.”
