Agudas Chassidei Chabad, the umbrella organization for the worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch movement, has expanded its fight to return the Schneerson Collection to the possession of Chabad headquarters in Brooklyn by filing a lawsuit against Russia in Yerushalayim District Court.

The suit, filed by lawyers Uri Keidar and Avi Blum and supported by American attorney Nat Lewin, seeks to enforce a 2010 ruling issued in the United States to seize Russian assets in Israel worth tens of millions of dollars.

The lawsuit aims to “transfer” to Israel the verdicts and rulings made against the Russian government in the United States, ordering them to hand over the Schneerson Collection and levying hefty fines for contempt of court in the U.S. that currently exceed $170 million.

The Schneerson Collection’ has been in Russian state hands since World War I’s end. Russia claims the collection is a national treasure of the Russian people since the seventh Chabad-Lubavitch Rebbe had no heirs. A Russian court also ordered the U.S. Library of Congress to pay fines of $50,000 a day for keeping books it borrowed in 1994.

Lewin, who came to Israel to accompany the lawsuit in the Jerusalem court, represented the Chabad movement in its 1987 legal victory, known by the Chasidim as “Didan Notzach” (“Victory is ours”), regarding the book collection left behind in Russia.

According to the report, Rabbi Shlomo Cunin, a member of Chabad in the United States involved in the recovery effort, said, “The Rebbe tasked us with returning the books from Russia. We have no doubt that the task will be completed as he wishes, and the books will be returned to the Rebbe’s library whether the Russians like it or not, and there is no delay or obstacle that will stand in our way to carry out this sacred task.” JNS

  1. Oh, enough with these books already. I’m tired of hearing about this endless soap opera. Who cares about these books? They’re out of style already. We have much better print and font now.

    • There’s Kedusha in each sefer and the Tzaddik’s Neshomo that wrote them is connected with them (see Sanhedrin, beginning of Perek Chelek). Even Russia realizes this. What they don’t realize is that if they hold onto holy objects that are not theirs that it eventually destroys them unless they return the holy items (see Pelishtim and the Aron in Shoftim).

  2. All the books are available online. Why are you making it up to be a big deal.? Ur position is in error. The answer to you is a big fat nyet.

Their last Rebbe said decades ago that the time of redemption has arrived. So why don’t they have their books back yet??

    • Good point. If they can’t even get back some “books”, how can they lecture us that their former leader is the Moshiach? You would think Moshiachs family has some mystical powers. Why haven’t they been able to get these books back yet???

      • Guess you don’t know that Moshiach is supposed to work through nature. Start with last two chapters of Sefer HaYad (Mishneh Torah) and quite commenting so much before actually learning.

  4. This is Golus mentality. Enuff with a book(s). Ur giving us real Yehudimm a bad name. Stop bearing a grudge. Try some luba =love and the book will come ur way. Real people want real peace. Peace will benefit all a few old timer books, maybe a few.

    • So I guess reishis tzmichas Ben Gurion mentality is to leave holy seforim in the hands of Non-Jewish governments who have stolen them. Figures.

  5. It’s time to surrender your hate to other Jews
It’s possible your the answer why moshiach is not here yet remove your baseless hatred for the benefit of Klal yisroel and allow moshiach to come now!

  6. Maybe Russia will put them in their place sooner or later, as an indication recently was given, when a high government official called them a cult.

  7. Maybe if the ChaBaD wanted the reflection of Israel turn be sin free as much as they want their books we would see new charedim. But its a gimmick set up for national oversee of the straggler jew. This is often not enough to build kedusha.
    .
Hope they free citizens to help their dynasty.
