rav-ovadiah-yosefChacham Ovadia Yosef’s personal chair mysteriously disappeared from a shul in Yerushalayim last week, but it was eventually found several days later.

Mispallelim at the Tiferes Yerushalaim shul were recently surprised to discover that the wooden chair that had served Chacham Ovadia was not in its place.

“We so carefully guarded it and now it’s gone,” one of the shul’s gabbaim said.

The chair is estimated to be worth about $100,000.

The mystery was eventually solved when one of the shul’s gabbaim said he had loaned it to be used at a bris without telling anyone, but said it will be returned soon.

He said that the baby’s parents, members of a well-known family, thought that Chacham Ovadia would attend the bris as the sandekand wanted to surprise him with the chair. Chacham Ovadiah did not attend the bris, but the chair remained in the couple’s house since then.

The shul in question became popular after  Chacham Ovadiah   first started giving his weekly drashos there. In recent years, he has relocated the drashos to a shul closer to his house in Har Nof, but the chair is still very special to  Chacham Ovadiah’s talmidim.

Several years ago, it was almost sold to a buyer for tens of thousands of dollars when the shul experienced financial difficulties.
