The head of UTJ and Shas met yesterday Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu after threatening an ultimatum to Bibi Netanyahu to either fire Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz within 48 hours for allowing repairs to tunnels servicing a high-speed rail line on Shabbos or the chareidi parties will leave the coalition

Katz had said that the repairs made to the rail line were in the category of “pikuach nefesh,” and that they were therefore permitted to be performed on Shabbos. The members of the UTJ and Shas parties didn’t agree.

Kol Haolam reports that at the meeting, Shas MK Aryeh Deri and UTJ MKs Yaakov Litzman (Agudas Yisroel) and Moshe Gafni (Degel HaTorah) called the chillul Shabbos “a very grave matter and an awful violation of the status quo,” but they did not threaten to leave the coalition or call for Katz’s resignation, although they did accuse him of misleading them by calling the repairs pikuach nefesh.

Netanyahu committed to establishing a committee to oversee all Shabbos issues so as to avoid such a crisis in the future.
