chavezHugo Chavez, the crazed South American leader who is struggling with cancer for more than a year now, sought a blessing from the Munkatcher Rebbe of Brooklyn.

Chavez himself did not visit the Rebbe, but a top Venezuela diplomat and lead Council official both slipped into the  Rebbe’s house a while ago asking that the  Rebbe  pray for Chavez’s well-being. The  Rebbe, in exchange, asked that Venezuela, one of a few countries to have full contact with Bolivia, should persuade Bolivia to free Yanky Ostreicher, the Jewish American businessman incarcerated there for almost a year now.

It is unclear if the diplomat and Council official channeled the message to Chavez.

  1. I heard from a Chusheve Rebbitzen from South America that any spanish name that ends with the letter’Z’ probably comes from Marranos
so there there is merit to this story

The Ostreicher family is very connected to Munkatch, going back to before WWII, when a family member was rosh hakahal. They remain closely connected until today. So I guess that the Rebbe was trying to do something about it for a long time for them (but obviously hasn’t succeeded yet), and one of the avenues pursued was via Venezuela. In that context, I could see a diplomat asking, perhaps in a joking way, for a blessing for their leader, in exchange for help.

Note that it is not stated if an actual blessing was given by the Rebbe. If the Rebbe’s blessing was so important for Chavez, I would think that Mr. Ostreicher would already be free.

  4. I thought of the idea of reaching out to him to help Yanky Ostreicher. He has a friendly relationship with some Rabbanim in Venezuela.

If he is in a position to help, and he feels he needs the Rebbe’s prayers, then there is a chance that he may yet be persuaded to help.

Why then publicize his reaching out to the Rebbe, which he may not take well to? In addition, why label him crazed?

Get your facts straight. Yanky Ostreicher is not from the well known Ostreicher family from Munkatch. Yanky Ostreicher’s family is well known and aligned with the Satmar community. The Munkatch Ostreichers (who were heads or the kehilla in Europe) are the ones who helped build the Munkatch Bais Medrash in Boro Park and live in the Five Towns.

Ofcourse, its a well know fact that the current Munkatcher Rebbe assists any Jew in need regardless of their affiliation, Munkatch or not. May Hashem help the Rebbe in his holy noble work and may Yanky be freed soon.
