House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (Wyo.) said this week that white supremacist ideology has penetrated both of America’s political parties.

“We’ve seen anti-Semitism, white supremacy, Holocaust denial, by people both on the right in the Republican Party and by people on the left in the Democratic Party,” Cheney said Wednesday during a meeting with the Cheyenne Rotary Club, according to The Casper Star-Tribune. “They can have no place in our in our public discourse. We have to be very clear that we stand for freedom and justice and equality and that we’re going to fight for those things.”

Cheney did not specify to whom in each party she was referring but has made similar comments on a number occasions over the past several months, particularly in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters, including adherents to the QAnon conspiracy theory.

  1. Disagree with Ms. Cheney’s oversimplification as follows:
Anti-Semitism – on this point she’s mostly correct – the far-right and far-left are both guilty. Unfortunately, the mainstream Democratic party has not rejected Omar and Tlaib as forcefully as the Republican party has rejected Duke and Greene.
White Supremacy – She’s completely wrong on this one. The far-right is often guilty of this, while the far-left (which has many minorities among its members) almost never is. If anything, the far-left has gone to the opposite extreme promoting ideas such as “White Privilege”, “White Fragility” and the like.
Holocaust Denial – While there is no shortage of anti-Semites on the far-left, for some reason lying about the Holocaust is mostly done by far-right Jew-haters. Of course there are leftist Holocaust deniers, but it’s not nearly the staple it is among right-wing hate groups.
