chernobler-rebbeA chossid of the Chernobler Rebbe complained to his manhig about the difficulties he’s experiencing in making living.

The Rebbe asked the chossid what his profession is. The chossid said that he is a professional photographer, but that there is little demand for this type of work in the chareidi community.

The Rebbe’s response demonstrates the righteousness of the leader who changed his habit to help the livelihood of his chossid.

The Rebbe, who is known, like other admorim including the Vizhnitzer Rebbe of Monsey, to shun having his picture taken, told the chossid, “Take my picture. Maybe it can help you make a living.”

chernobler-rebbe-5The chossid explained to the Rebbe that a proper picture is taken in a studio with the appropriate lighting and background.

The Rebbe, whose every minute is so precious, joined his chossid at a studio for an hour, allowing his follower to take his picture so he can sell it and make some money.

  1. the famous picture of rav gifter zt”l sitting and writing chidushim came about from the same story only there he said to take the picture the way he was and that he wont get dressed for it

  2. R’ Moshe Feinstein used to enjoy letting children take his picture. He said “Better they should hang my picture on the wall than a baseball player!”

I heard that story from my Rosh Yeshiva, who heard R’ Moshe say it.

  3. The Chernobler Rebbe of Bnei Brak is a holy man and a great tzaddik!! even without this story.

Will spend time talking to any broken heart may it be a bochur of 15 or an old man all alike!!

  4. I think the photographer should have had some common sense to take the photo in the Rebbe’s place, rather than shlepping him to the studio and taking his time thus. The Rebbe already went out on a limb to allow him to take the photo, even though he is opposed to it.

  5. #4….just let it go and let it stand on its own merit. If the Rebbe would not have wanted to go to the studio, he would have voiced his opinion. Give credit where it is due and don’t look to ruin a good thing!!!!!
Why is it that there are some people who just need to find something negetive in anything good? Why ….oh why?????
    Please…develop an ayin tov…..

  6. #4: Of course you are right. Which just goes to show you the greatness of the Rebbe. He went along with the man’s meshugasin and did not point out the obvious to him. He did the chesed “bishlaymus” – with perfection and understanding.

  7. There is a photographer in my town, Mr. Ed Bernstein, who has one of the largest collections of gedolim pictures. I’ve heard him personally testify he’s gotten major gedolim to pose for him to help out his parnasa.

Who is like this nation , Israel, and its leaders!

  8. V’hayu einecha ro’os es mor’echah.

    * I once heard a similar incident about (I think) R’ Elchonon that someone wanted to take a picture of him while he was at his shtender learning. After spending some time setting up his camera ‘under the tallis’, when he was just about ready to take the picture, R’ Elchonon turned his shtender around to face the other way. The man proceeded to set up his camera on the other side of the room. Once again, when the man was just about ready, R’ Elchonon turned around. This went on a few times. The man explained to R’ Elchonon that he needs the picture for his parnassah, so R’ Elchonon allowed him to take a picture.

    * I once asked R’ Avigdor Miller zt’l if I can take a picture of him. He said, “Why waste a film on me?”, but he stopped and posed.
