rabbi-shlomo-amarThe Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rav Shlomo Amar, lashed out Sunday against the recent decision by the Attorney General and Legal Advisor to the Government, Yehuda Weinstein, to grant official recognition and funding to ‘rabbis’ from the Reform movement.

Speaking at a ceremony for new rabbis and rabbinical judges at Beit HaKnesset HaGadol in Yerushalayim, Rav Amar said: “I do not know if they understand the meaning of the deep danger in this thing.”

Rav Amar said that he learned of the official decision when he was traveling, and no one had told him of it in advance. He then wrote letters to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and to Weinstein, against the decision.

“I attempted to sway the heart of the prime minister, who is the person responsible for the nation and leading it at this time,” he related. “I argued – can one make such a decision without consulting the Council of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, which is the official rabbinate? Can one grant recognition without hearing its opinion?”

Rav Amar has yet to receive replies from Netanyahu and Weinstein.

Next week, the Chief Rabbi is holding a large scale discussion of the subject with the participation of many other leading rabbis. They will decide on steps to take in order to bring about a cancellation of the decision.

  1. “I argued – can one make such a decision without consulting the Council of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, which is the official rabbinate? Can one grant recognition without hearing its opinion?”

This really doesn’t matter, because the Rabbinate is a government organization. They are fully bound by the g’zeiros the medinah issues them.

So, yes the medinah can and has made such decisions without consulting the Rabbinate.

  2. Kol HaKavod to the Chief Rabbi for fighting against the funding of the chilul of the Reform movement. Too many tzoros already in EY. By funding them, it will give them more power and clout which can bring frightening results.

  3. As I stated more than two week ago when this issue was first raised, the truth here is that some reform/progressive/liberal congregations and Rabbis support such things as same gender marriage, thus they should not be funded by the State of Israel. A nation stands or falls on its principles. A dilution or dimunition of certain fundamental traditional aspects of Judaism and the State will lose its raison d’etre.

  4. Once recognition is given to anyone not approved by the Rabbanut where does one draw the line? Atheist Humanist “rabbis’ or rabbis preaching belief in Yeshua R’L Without real parameters everything comes in to play it is called the law of unintended consequences
Rav Amar I pray Hashem blesses your efforts with Hatzlacha.

  5. I have 1 question for all of you who are waging war against the conservative and reform movement.

DO YOU THINK THAT THE REBONO SHEL OLAM DOES OR DOES NOT LISTEN TO THE PRAYERS AND TFILLOS OF CONSERVATIVE AND REFORM JEWS?

If you think not, then my next question would be:

    HOW DO YOU KNOW?

  6. I was there and heard Rav Amar speak. He speaks plainly ,intelligently, and effectively. I commend him and wish him continued success.

  7. #9, Sheldon: This has nothing to do with the victims of the Reform/Conservative movements. They are the uninformed Jews ignorant of anything Jewish and are the easy prey of these movements. They are like the kidnapped children. G-D listens to their prayers as he does to any human being who prays with a pure heart. The problem here is not them, but the movements (reform/reconstructionist, etc.,etc.), all a mockery of true Torah Judaism. The leaders of these cults are the sinners who cause the innocent to lead the lives of sinners. Torah is Divine and cannot and will not be changed to fit the convenience of these assimilated Jews who have taken on the ways of the non-Jews. They have the option of heeding the Torah or not, but they have no right in forming denominations that veer off the true Torah path. To give them any credence and also fund them in Eretz Yisrael is pure heresy.

  8. With all due respect to Anonymous, what you are saying may be true. Yet your end result is that your attack is seen as an attack on everyone. The net result is that you push away everyone. We have been fighting reform and conservative movements for several centuries and every time you do it creates a chillul hashem.

If people are looking for a means of serving G-D and humanity and it is not to your level, do we smack them down and call it nothing? Or maybe, we can see the opportunity that we have interested parties. Maybe we can meet them where they are, and educate and welcome them. Respect who they are and where they are.
If they can’t meet us all the way then let’s at least keep the door open rather than shut it in their faces.
