Following news that Israel Railways suffered losses after upgrading wage agreements, MK Uri Maklev of UTJ challenged Transport Minister Yisrael Katz whether the losses might also be due to the railway paying inflated wages to employees forced to work on Shabbos.

Maklev noted that Israel Railways lost $6.5 million compared to last year’s quarter, despite a 5.2% increase in passengers. Noting that rail workers have stopped complaining about having to work on Shabbos, he suspected that their silence was bought by extra pay.

Maklev added that a recent large increase in the volume of Shabbos railway work made him suspect that it had nothing to do with pikuach nefesh.
