China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Wednesday told U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Washington should stop interfering in his country’s affairs and respect Beijing’s core interests.

During a phone call between the two top diplomats that was held ahead of Blinken’s visit to China on Sunday, Gang said that there are “new difficulties and challenges” between their countries.

“Since the beginning of the year, Sino-American relations have faced new difficulties and challenges,” Qin said, according to a Chinese foreign ministry readout of the call.

“It’s clear who is responsible,” Qin pointed out.

“China has always viewed and managed China-U.S. relations in accordance with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation put forward by President Xi Jinping,” the diplomat noted, adding that he hoped the U.S. could meet China half-way and manage their differences.

Blinken in turn said on Twitter that they “discussed ongoing efforts to maintain open channels of communication as well as bilateral and global issues.” He also “made clear the U.S. would continue to use diplomatic engagements to raise areas of concern as well as areas of potential cooperation,” according to State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

Blinken is expected in Beijing on Sunday to ease the tensions between the two countries in what will be the first trip by a top U.S. diplomat to China since his predecessor Mike Pompeo visited the country in October 2018. Blinken was supposed to arrive in Beijing in February but canceled the trip over a Chinese surveillance balloon scandal.

  1. China’s FM Tells Blinken U.S. Should Stop Interfering In Beijing’s Affairs
In response to the Chinese FM’s remarks, Mr. Blinken reportedly told his Chinese counterpart: “You’re spot on with regards to the spy balloons. Those balloons were Chinese balloons, not American balloons, and we had no right to shoot them down any more then we would have a right to shoot up a Chinese Chow Mein dish.”
“However,” Mr. Blinken went on to tell his Chinese counterpart, “The Biden family has also done a lot of business with China, which, admittedly enriched the Biden family, but also benefited the Chinese government. And I would never label those kind of business tansactions as US interference in Chinese affairs – or Biden interference in Chinese affairs for that matter. On the contrary, these were mutual business deals that benifited both sides, the Chinese and the Biden family.”
“Okay, I agree with you on that one,” the Chinese Foreign Minister replied, “and I’m sorry about my harsh tone, but what about compensating us for the balloons!”
“Forget about those circus balloons,” Mr. Blinken replied, “I’m inviting you to the White House, where you can see a REAL circus in action, clowns and all, up close, 24/7. And it won’t cost you a dime!”
“It’s a deal!” the Chinese Foreign Minister replied, “I’m scheduling my visit to the White House on July 4, Independence Day, when I’ll be celebrating Chinese independence from US interference. And no need to affix any party balloons to the ceilings, because I will bring OUR balloons, the expensive balloons, wink, wink. And maybe I can sit down with President Biden and arrange some new business deals with him and his family, wink, wink.”
“Wink, wink to you too,” Mr. Blinken replied, “see you on July 4, and bring lots of peanuts and cotton candy with you, because the circus you’re going to see and experience in the White House is something you’ve never experienced before. I can promise you that much! Bye!”
