ice-creamForget Ben & Jerry’s, Baskin Robbins, and Hagen Dasz. Open any Jewish publication and the names are Klein’s, Mehadrin and J & J. The battle for the Cholov Yisrael ice cream market appears to have heated up as one source told Kosher Today that it is a $50 million market, a far cry from its modest sales just a decade or two ago. In fact, the ice cream is no longer marketed on kashrus alone, with the emphasis being on cholov Yisrael.

In a broad-based advertising campaign, Klein’s has been using John LeSauvage, an ice cream expert to tout its quality message. Mehadrin & J&J’s have used children, their primary market, to drive home their quality message. Klein’s ice cream, which at first was sold only in kosher specialty stores, is sold in supermarkets, convenience stores and even gas stations.

Sources told Kosher Today that the cholov Yisrael ice cream companies are selling to a far broader audience than just people who eat cholov Yisrael. The reason: the significant improvement in quality, in most cases on-par with other non-cholov Yisrael ice cream. To make their case, the ice cream companies have taken out full-page ads in Orthodox Jewish publications.

  1. Besides being yummy & delish it’s caloric too. Companies have addressed thatI too with yogurt ice cream and the likes. Focuses on Hechser have also been a primary concern which manufacturing has addressed.
Beautiful decorative cakes fill the store shelves as well.
And the age-old nursery rhyme we all scream for ice cream!

  2. for those who eat chalav Stam, it is clear that they are better. Cholov Yisrael is selling well due to a larger frum community with larger demands. but let’s not kid ourselves, Ben and jerrys is far better than any cholov Yisrael product, any day of the week.

  3. What a out cholov yisroel
    Milk wars ?
Does anyone think it is fair to always have spoiled milk in the summer
If anyone is lucky enough to gave Pride of the farm milk
They will see that it will not spoil the day you buy the milk.
I think it is genaiva to sell these milks.
    Please let’s have an outcry.
A few years ago Dov Hikind said ge will look into this but nothing ever came of it.

  4. When ever some one sees Klein’s and Mehadrin ice cream there is a wonderful story to remember.
During the regional Black out of 2003 both Klein’s and mehadrin’s wear houses lost power bringing potential disaster to they’re businesses.
After just installing a state of the art generator Klein’s freezers were back on line and the costly investment seemed to pay off marvelously.
Then in an act of magnificent Kidush Hashem Mr.Klein called his biggest “competitor” Mehadrin, and invited them to use the Klein wear house freezer to store they’re inventory so it would not spoil.
They further let them plug in they’re delivery trucks in to they’re outdoor outlets.
Lesson to all the ice cream loving Jews. There is no competition.
    There is only Hashem.

  5. Eli, ice cream is the perfect health food. it has a balance of all three macro nutrients, protein, fats, and carbs. the key is to eat it as a meal replacement instead of a dessert.

  6. Best cholov Yisroel ice cream is Pride of the Farm, available in Baltimore and Lakewood, and I don’t know where else. It is cheaper and made with better ingredients, doesn’t have all kinds of varieties, but it is a premium ice cream. They have chocolate, vanilla, coffee, butter pecan, sometimes cherry vanilla. YUM!

  7. #8, yes, REALLY, and while we’re on the topic an ice cream cake doesn’t even come close to a Carvel one, any day of the week.

  8. agree with 12 and 13. instead of advertising so much they should lower the prices. I think most of us shoppers buy any ice creams that are on sale.

  9. want to know why i miss my chalav stam ice cream so much, and rarely purchase yours? i dont care how good your quality is- where are all your flavors?? BORING BORING BORING flavors is all i get.vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and if i want to be really daring, cookie dough and butter pecan.
    big whoop.
can someone PLLLEEEEEEEASE consider us CH”Y converts, and make the flavors that Ben and Jerrys, etc produces?
i want my Rocky Road, Banana Fudge Chunk, Peanut Butter Fudge, Strawberry Cheesecake etc etc etc.
    Thank You.

  11. I make my own ice cream in the kitchen. Can’t believe how easy, cheap, delicious and healthy it is. Got my $50 ice cream maker that’s sold all over, milk, cream and sugar (add as you prefer: vanilla, fruits, syrups, mint, chocolate etc) and in 20 minutes you’ve got a gallon or half gallon of ice cream.

  12. I disagree with those that say chalav stam is so much better. I have had both and dont agree. I think Kliens ice cream, packaged and especially fresh, is amazing. I found chalv stam is too rich and I think most people who claim its better, is really just for old times sake. Its like people who say dunkin donuts donuts are better than Bagel Noshes’s doughnus (in lakewood), Bagel Noshes’s are a million times better and people who are not jewish have told me the same thing.
