New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie briefly stole the spotlight at the Mets-Cardinals game on Tuesday night, catching a foul ball from the stands only to be booed by fans and mocked by an announcer, the Daily Beast reports.
Despite his quick reflexes and impressive one-handed grab, the crowd at Citi Field immediately began booing when it became clear the Republican governor was the one to catch a foul ball hit by Cardinals second baseman Paul DeJong. As Christie rejoiced in his feat and high-fived a fellow fan, the announcer remarked that it was “nice to see him get from the beach to the ballpark.” With his latest approval rating around 15 percent, Christie has faced sharp criticism in New Jersey after he was spotted relaxing on a beach closed to the public amid a government shutdown earlier this month.
