chris-christieNew Jersey Governor Chris Christie insists he’s not mulling a campaign for president in 2012, but that’s not stopping him from weighing in on hot political issues and critiquing President Barack Obama’s approach to matters of policy.

During an interview that aired on Tuesday’s edition of “Piers Morgan Tonight” on CNN, Christie reiterated that has no intention of vying for the White House in the next election cycle. “I’m one hundred percent certain I’m not going to run,” he said.

Amid speculation that he could jump into the GOP primary mix last year, the Republican governor attempted to crush the buzz by saying, “Short of suicide, I don’t really know what I’d have to do to convince you people that I’m not running.”

Christie told Morgan that while he stands by the remarks, his wife didn’t like the joke.

“I mean, what I said was, what do I have to do to convince you that I’m not going to run for president, commit suicide?” he said. “You know, that’s kind of my humor. My wife didn’t think it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever said.”

Asked about who he sees as his party’s best option to take on Obama in 2012, Christie responded, “I don’t think we have a best option yet.”

Later in the interview, the governor drew a contrast between his own style of governing with that of the president. He suggested that Obama “gets himself in trouble” when he tackles policy with an approach that’s “a little bit too detail-oriented, a little bit too professorial.”

On a more specific political issue, Christie was asked to define his position on civil unions and same gender marriage. CNN relays an excerpt of the exchange that went down:

MORGAN: You support civil unions, but you don’t support [same gender] marriage. Can you see a situation where you would change your mind about that?

CHRISTIE: I don’t think so. I believe marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. I think it’s special and unique in society. And I think we can have civil unions that can help to give the same type of legal rights to [same gender] couples that marriage gives them.

But I just think marriage is a special connotation. And I couldn’t see myself changing my mind on that. But I am in favor of making sure that [same gender] couples have the same type of legal rights that same — that [regular] couples have.

On a non-political note during the one-on-one, Christie was asked what he feels “most guilty about.” His response: “It depends on the day. The thing that I feel most guilty about, my weight. … because I’m really struggling, been struggling for a long time with it. And — and I know that it would be better for my kids if I got it more under control. And so I do feel a sense of guilt at times about that.”
