Israel’s Military Police and Department of Internal Police Investigations have opened an investigation after a scary incident Monday night near the Me’aras Hamachpeila in Chevron, when a grenade exploded at a joint guard post of the IDF and the Military Police.
According to a Kan News report, the incident occurred when a Military Police fighter approached the IDF soldiers standing guard and asked to see one of their grenade, and proceeded to release the safety catch and drop a grenade on the floor, believing it to be a dummy grenade.
The soldiers immediately shouted “grenade” and took cover. The grenade exploded and shrapnel lightly injured a female soldier.
The IDF has categorized the incident as “arms play,” and emphasized that the incident could have easily been a major disaster.
All military police commanders have now been instructed to give their fighters safety lessons with an emphasis on the routine use of weapons following the incident.
