Colin Powell: Why Can’t We Have a Health Care System Like in Europe?

powellFormer Secretary of State Colin Powell has waded into the health care debate with a broad endorsement of the kind of universal health plan found in Europe, Canada and South Korea.

“I am not an expert in health care, or Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, or however you choose to describe it, but I do know this: I have benefited from that kind of universal health care in my 55 years of public life,” Powell said, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal, last week at an annual “survivors celebration breakfast” in Seattle for those who, like Powell, have battled prostate cancer. “And I don’t see why we can’t do what Europe is doing, what Canada is doing, what Korea is doing, what all these other places are doing.”

Europe, Canada and Korea all have a “single-payer” system, in which the government pays for the costs of health care.

Some Democrats who strongly advocated for, and failed to get, a single-payer system in the 2010 Affordable Care Act, still believe the current law doesn’t go far enough to reform the US health system.

A retired four-star general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell told the audience about a woman named Anne, who as his firewood supplier, faced a healthcare scare of her own. Anne asked Powell to help pay for her healthcare bills, as her insurance didn’t cover an MRI she needed as a prerequisite to being treated for a growth in her brain. In addition, Powell’s wife Alma recently suffered from three aneurysms and an artery blockage. “After these two events, of Alma and Anne, I’ve been thinking, why is it like this?” said Powell.

“We are a wealthy enough country with the capacity to make sure that every one of our fellow citizens has access to quality health care,” said Powell. “(Let’s show) the rest of the world what our democratic system is all about and how we take care of all of our citizens.”

  1. Because those countries aren’t comprised of 50% freeloaders who take all the transfer payments and don’t pay any of the taxes.

  2. “I am not an expert in health care, or Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, or however you choose to describe it,

    DUH that is an understatment

but I do know this: I have benefited from that kind of universal health care in my 55 years of public life,” Powell said, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal, last week at an annual “survivors celebration breakfast” in Seattle for those who, like Powell, have battled prostate cancer. “And I don’t see why we can’t do what Europe is doing, what Canada is doing, what Korea is doing, what all these other places are doing.”

    meanwhile

In Judaism it is called tzedoko.
here is it called theivery/socialism –
socialism is great until other peoples money runs out – said margaret thatcher.

we have to pay more for a couple of people to get coverage.
most people are hurt by this stupid plan

and, no the system does not work well in canada, or in europe, people die because they wait to see the doctor because it is rationed care

    this is not better.
just the insurance industry does very well with this
i like change – lets change back

  3. Except we’re not a wealthy country any more. All the money has floated to the top, and the middle class is broke. When a country has an income inequality problem like ours, the money just isn’t available to the vast majority of the population.

  4. That was tries by Hilary Clinton and again it was a disaster congress said no this was based on lies and is now hurting more then helping
We where told we could have our own doctor now no we can’t even pick the hospital we want to go to. Cheaper it’s more expensive the democrats knowingly lied to us and now this fool is too

  5. all the doctors flee from Canada because they don’t get paid…and it takes 6 months to get a MRI, and on weekends in CANADA the only way to get a doctor for a basic issue is the emergency room which we know how long of a wait that can end up being.
They need to do their research before they talk, if they would have we wouldn’t be in this ObamaCare mess.

  6. Lichiorah, you meant “2008” & “2012”. The bummer wasn’t born yet, in those years. Although, I heard that Kenyans do live long.

  7. Does he realize that in England after a certain age they leave people to die?

    he does not care
    obama does not care
they dont participate with the lousy insurance
