Several Turkish media outlets mistakenly reported that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated by an Israeli agent, taking a joke seriously.

The exact details surrounding Haniyeh’s assassination remain unclear, but Haber Global initially reported that an individual named “Amit Nakesh” was responsible for the assassination.

This report was subsequently retracted once the channel realized that the name was a playful reference to the Hebrew term “hamitnakesh,” which translates to “the assassin.” The initial “h” sound is often dropped in spoken Hebrew, making “hamitnakesh” sound like “amitnakesh.” Since “Amit” is a common Israeli name, “amitnakesh” can be broken down into “Amit Nakesh.”

Akdeniz Gerçek newspaper went as far as to create a profile for Amit Nakesh, describing him as an experienced Mossad agent with a history in other Israeli security agencies.

Another outlet, Usak Olay, also reported on the supposed assassin, suggesting that despite being a veteran of Israeli security forces, Amit Nakesh might be an Israeli of Indian descent.

Their report further mentioned that “security experts are closely examining Amit Nakesh’s role and involvement in the murder of Ismail Haniyeh.”

In a similar incident in May, after Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash, social media memes suggested that an Israeli agent named Eli Copter was responsible.

The Hebrew word for “helicopter” is “masok,” but Israelis often pronounce “helicopter” as “elicopter” due to dropping the initial “h” sound. “Eli” is a common name, leading to jokes that named the supposed agent “Eli Copter.”

Some people took this joke seriously and accused Israel of orchestrating the crash through an agent named Eli Copter.

However, investigations have confirmed that the helicopter crash was neither intentional nor part of any larger conspiracy.
