school-busLakewood, NJ – Traffic safety cops handed out 21 tickets Wednesday morning to school-bus drivers as part of an investigation into a recently received rash of complaints about busing.

In response to the complaints, police monitored school bus routes throughout town early Wednesday morning before school, Officer David Silberstein said.

Silberstein did not know the exact number of recent complaints the police department received. He also said he was uncertain about the nature of the complaints.

“It would have to be a substantial amount if (the police administration) asked us to do something like this,” he said.

The tickets issued were:

14 for failure to wear a seat belt;

3 for cell phone violations;

2 for red light violations;

1 for a stop sign violation; and

1 for failure to exhibit insurance documents.

To be sure, school busing has become an issue throughout the township recently.

The township Board of Education held a hearing Friday to discuss the Negba Bus Service of Linden. Parents have complained that the bus company was often late, or canceled its service without notifying the schools, the school board or parents.

The school board voted to take 15 routes away from the company, and is prepared to take legal action to void the district’s contract with the bus service if problems persist.

The school board now requires all bus companies transporting township students to install cameras on their buses.
