dan-donovanStaten Island Congressman Dan Donovan (NY-11) today announced he will be traveling to Israel as part of a congressional delegation sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation. Congressman Donovan pledged during his campaign that a visit to Israel would be the first international trip he would take upon his election.

The seminar is considered one of the most substantive and rigorous programs allowing members of Congress to obtain firsthand knowledge of pressing foreign policy issues. Congressman Donovan will travel with 35 other members of the House, including 27 freshman. The trip is scheduled from August 8th through the 15th. The trip is strictly educational with no lobbying and paid entirely using private funds.

Congressman Donovan and his colleagues will meet with key Israeli and Palestinian leaders, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, President Rivlin and Opposition Leader Herzog, among others. He will also meet with top military leaders, defense and economic experts and peace negotiators. The delegation will spend time visiting all of the borders and Jewish, Christian and Islamic holy sites, as well as U.S.-Israel defense and technology projects. Members are expected to learn about issues involving security, technology, agriculture and energy.

“Visiting Israel and learning firsthand about the many shared issues between our nations is incredibly important to me,” said Congressman Donovan. “As a member of the Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security committees, in addition to being the representative of one of the largest Jewish constituencies, this trip will give me invaluable insight on the challenges we face. It will be a jam-packed, whirlwind trip but I look forward to sharing my experience with the people of the 11th congressional district on how we can work to secure our relationship with one of our greatest allies and address our very serious national security concerns.”
