The US death toll from the coronavirus pandemic topped 5,000 late Wednesday, according to a running tally from Johns Hopkins University.
As of Thursday, 5,775 people had died, the tally showed, on the same day the United States set a one-day record of 884 fatalities in 24 hours.
According to Johns Hopkins, the US leads the world in the number of coronavirus cases, with 215,417.
Globally, the number of confirmed cases of people diagnosed with COVID-19 coronavirus hit 1 million Thursday afternoon.
