bris(JNS.org) The Council of Europe will not ban bris milah as it does female mutilation, the organization’s secretary-general, Thorbjorn Jagland, wrote in a letter to Israeli President Shimon Peres. The letter came in response to Peres’s appeal over the council’s recent resolution against circumcision.

The council’s Parliamentary Assembly had voted 78-13 in favor of a non-binding resolution that called male ritual circumcision a “violation of the physical integrity of children.” Peres wrote to Jagland that male circumcision is a “fundamental element of our tradition and obligation as Jews.”

  1. This is statesmanship. No screaming, no name-callng, no cries of anti-Semitism. Just diplomacy and an appeal coming from a credible source. And guess what – it worked.
