mount-everestClimber Daniel Keren on Tuesday became the fifth Israeli to conquer the tallest mountain in the world, when his expedition reached the summit of Mount Everest. Keren arrived at the peak along with ten porters and three others climbers from Mexico, Canada, and Germany. The team suffered many problems on its way to the top, with several other team members pulling out of the mission because of medical problems.
The first Israeli to reach “the roof of the world” was Doron Arel, who placed an Israeli flag at the summit in 1992, 39 years after New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to achieve the feat along with Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay.Gedaliah Shtirmer reached the summit in 2006, as did Dudu Yifrah and Micha Yaniv, who climbed with Palestinian Ali Bushnaq as part of a peace mission.

Keren is a former banker who once managed a fund now run by Nochi Dankner’s group of companies. He is also known as one of the leading Israelis in the field of endurance sports, having founded the Tel Aviv Runners’ club, completed the 250-kilometer (150 mi.) Sahara Desert Ultra Marathon and traversed a glacier in Greenland during a mission to the North Pole.
