Hundreds of drinkers crowded a New York City block on Friday night, sipping takeout drinks and listening to live music despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Widely circulated footage of the impromptu street party on St. Marks Place, in the East Village, reached New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Shabbos, who threatened to enforce the state’s public health guidelines in person.

Cuomo didn’t go down.

This came a day after Cuomo and his health commissioner dashed the hopes of tens of thousands by prohibiting sleepaway summer camps from opening in New York.

On Friday, New York had its lowest number of COVID-related deaths and lowest number of total hospitalizations since March 20. But face masks are still compulsory when social distancing isn’t possible, and New Yorkers are supposed to keep six feet distance when in public. Read more.

  1. Sleepaway summer camps is definitely a health hazard in these times, whether you choose to ignore this fact or not. Some boys sleepaway camps and Yeshivas are finding campuses out of NY and are opening in those locations under strict rules. This is a time to think differently than we did before. Be creative. Maybe start night activity camps for your kids. Children belong to the responsibility of their parents right now. This is not the end of the world. Very sad things have happened these past few months. It’s time to view life a little differently than before and adapt accordingly. Stop fighting a battle you can’t win. And hope for a better summer next year. Be a role model for your children and show them how to be resilient and how to make do with a bit less this summer. Many other children have never gone to sleep away camp and they turned out just fine. Thank you.

    • You’re a little baby. For immature mules like you, you should stay locked up in your little basement. This way you’ll be nice and safe and you’ll live forever.

        • 800 and still counting. If you pass me in the supermarket, I’ll make it my business to pass on some of my Coronavirus special formula to you. I’m a very magnanimous person when it comes to these things. Catch you later.

    • Oh MTS, seems like either your parents couldn’t afford to send you to camp, and or you are an old single with no kids, so you dont and wont understand what camp means to kids.

  2. You have the governor and the health commissioner saying their going by the facts, the science the numbers, past history, etc. And they came to the conclusion that there’s a health risk by opening the camps, so why is everybody smarter and knows better than them and they feel that coumo is a bad governess and he has to go…. When has your own personal opinion became so more accurate and knowledgeable more than the experts?

  3. yes I know the answer, but I want to bring out a point, that all of you don’t be hypocrites that when others had the opinion that they should open schuls or schools a month ago, most of you were bashing them as a iresponsible and even murderers that don’t care for the health of our people,l cuz they went against “the experts”, now when you feel that you know better, “the experts” became evil people.

  4. In response to MTS. You must have grown children . And the same way in order to sit on the Sanhedrin one had to have young children still at home so too you do not get to share air your opinion as you LACK EMPATHY. for those of us home schooling home entertaining and every single other thing in between we understand the desperate need for social interaction that our children so desperately need. You sadly don’t. So don’t comment. You sound like comrade debozo and dictator Cuomo. Our children need normalcy and friendship. The cancellation of camps has ZERO basis in medical reality. As you can see agudah is opening in new hamshire. Does covid health not exist a few miles over? The closing of sleepaway camps is our rishus. And for the moron Cuomo who said “be creative’ that’s EXACTLY what we parents have been doing for 3 months. Enough is enough. This is about control not health.

    • Are you sure you are the one who has empathy? There are children who don’t go to camp anyway. Not everyone is affluent enough to have spare money for those “desperate needs”.
