US Coast Guard officials on Thursday said the debris discovered along the seafloor near the Titanic’s wreckage, which the Titan submersible was set to view, is “consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel,” the NY Post reports.
Officials said they discovered five different major pieces of debris that indicate there was a “catastrophic event” involving the cramped vessel carrying world exploder Hamish Harding, Pakistani energy and tech mogul Shanzada Dawood and his son Sulaiman, 19, French diver and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush.
Rear Adm. John Mauger of the US Coast Guard said officials used listening devices throughout their search and “did not hear any signs of catastrophic failure.”
The small, five-person vessel submerged around 8 a.m. Sunday but lost connection with its OceanGate surface team about one hour and 45 minutes into its trip.
Mauger said it was too early to tell exactly when the implosion occurred. Officials will continue to investigate the debris field.
