Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris represent the Democratic Party’s most promising options to defeat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming November election, according to a Democratic pollster.

A survey by Bendixen & Amandi, as reported by Politico, shows Clinton ahead of Trump with 43% to his 41%, and Harris leading Trump with 42% to his 41%. This poll, conducted after President Joe Biden’s challenging debate performance on June 27, indicates Biden trailing Trump by one point (43% to 42%).

The poll also reveals that among likely voters who watched the debate:

  • Only 29% believe Biden possesses the mental capacity and physical stamina to serve another four-year term, while 61% do not.
  • Only 33% think he should remain the Democratic Party’s nominee, whereas 52% think he should not.
  • Only 50% of Democratic voters support Biden continuing as the party’s presidential nominee.

Since the debate, Democrats have been in disarray regarding Biden’s status, with many long-time supporters now suggesting he should step aside as the party’s presumptive nominee. However, Biden has rejected these calls and remains determined to continue his campaign.

“Voters have significant concerns about President Biden’s advanced age, and these concerns have only grown louder,” said Fernand Amandi, the seasoned Miami-based pollster whose firm advised former President Barack Obama in his two presidential campaigns, Politico reported. “But [they are] still not enough where it has made the race a blowout for Trump.”

Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, is the latest lawmaker urging Biden to end his reelection bid, as reported by The Hill.

The Bendixen & Amandi poll also examined other potential Democratic tickets, finding that a Clinton-Harris ticket leads Trump 43% to 40%, a 4-point advantage over Biden-Harris.

The 76-year-old Clinton, the 2016 nominee, has not been seriously considered as a candidate this time around. “I’m really surprised by Hillary’s strength,” Amandi said, Politico reported. “While some dismiss her as yesterday’s news and a candidate of the past, voters at least in this poll suggest they may be open to a Clinton comeback and that a ticket with Clinton as president and Harris as vice president is even ‘stronger together.'”

The poll’s findings show California Gov. Gavin Newsom trailing Trump 40% to 37% and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer behind Trump 40% to 36%.

The Bendixen & Amandi survey was conducted in English and Spanish from July 2-6 among 1,000 likely voters, with a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

  1. The only thing worse than Hillary & Camel is Hillary & Michelle. Though any combination of the three would be dangerous.
