House Democrats’ sit-in on the floor of the chamber stretched into this morning in a push for more gun-control measures. “Now is the time for us to find a way to dramatize it, to make it real,” Rep. John Lewis said. “We have to occupy the floor of the House until there is action.”

Capping the raucous session, Republicans late Wednesday were able to push through a partisan bill to reject a financial-industry rule and fund efforts to fight the Zika virus without stopping for debate. House Speaker Paul Ryan overruled objections and moved to adjourn, while Democrats cried “Shame! Shame!”

Though Democrats gradually packed up and left after adjournment, some stayed. A core group of about 20 had lingered, many with pillows and blankets. At about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Democrats said their move was successful in raising awareness about gun violence. Read more.

  1. I’m a republican but when it comes to this issue I disagree strongly. What do republicans gain by kissing up to the NRA. The gun issue has become for republicans what climate change and other “rights” has become for democrats. Since when did the second amendment become so holy that it can’t be updated for 2016. Our founding fathers who made the second amendment did not have assault rifles and other weapons capable of killing hundreds at a time. How many more mass killings does there have to be G-D forbid before republicans say enough. I hold any republican who just because of petty politics can’t even back a bill that says to do a more thorough back ground check as guilty as these lunatics who commit these murders.

  2. The Democrats are in the minority now so they cant “force” anything. If it was the other way around, they would have the Republicans arrested. Typical double standard publicity stunt being perpetrated by the Democrats.
