Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich (N.M.) and Rep. Darren Soto (Fla.) announced on Tuesday they would be introducing legislation to set out a plan to make Puerto Rico a state.

The bill would set up a process to admit Puerto Rico as the nation’s 51st state if such a plan is approved by the island’s voters in a referendum.

Axios first reported on the proposal, which is also backed by the resident commissioner of Puerto Rico, Del. Jenniffer González-Colón (R).

Heinrich noted his own state’s path to statehood was decades long.

“My home state of New Mexico had a similar struggle to achieve statehood. It took 50 New Mexico statehood bills and 64 years before we were finally admitted to the United States,” Heinrich said.

Support for statehood for Puerto Rico is growing, though it remains a divisive topic.

  1. What rationale/justification is being offered to change the America, as we know it? Do we need another state? Further, do we need another state that will only be a burden to us taxpayers? Which American will benefit from this?

  2. The war with Spain was over 120 years ago. Just cut them loose. Let Puerto Rico be its own proud country. This island does not offer any kind of strategic benefit to the United States anyway. The Puerto Ricans who were born on or lived on the mainland for the last decade or so should be given a choice to retain their US citizenship, the rest should go back to their proud homeland. That should reduce the US welfare and felon population nicely.

  3. The only reason those treacherous democrats want Puerto Rico, is to guarantee another 2 democrat senators in their arsenal. With PR in their pocket, the Rino/Republican lead will be done forever. A total dyed in Blue state.

    • It would be good to destroy the current Republican Party but it is very likely that PR would send Republicans to Congress. It’s current non voting delegate is a Republican.

In any case the decision should be made by Puerto Ricans not mainlanders. There is an absolutely compelling case for making the District of Columbia a state and its people want it.

  4. The ‘benefit’ to the US, is that they will be more people voting Dem. That’s their sole motivation for this.

    • Presidents Ford, Reagan, and Bush 41 all supported Puerto Rican Statehood. You think they wanted to help Democrats?
