Two Maryland lawmakers are pushing to raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour, joining a national movement that is being embraced by three of the state’s Democratic candidates for governor and has already succeeded in Montgomery County and Washington, District of Columbia.

Sen. Richard Madaleno Jr., D-Montgomery, and Del. Shelly Hettleman, D-Baltimore County, announced Monday that they will introduce legislation this year to raise the state’s lowest allowable wage from its current $10.10 an hour to $15 by 2023.

Madaleno said the $10.10 minimum, which took effect this year under legislation signed by former governor Martin O’Malley, D, is not keeping up with inflation and leaves too many low-wage workers struggling to make ends meet.

“No one working full-time should live in poverty,” said Madaleno, one of seven Democrats vying to challenge Gov. Larry Hogan, R, in the 2018 election. “This is a critical step in restoring fairness to the working families of our state.”
