Alan Dershowitz, emeritus law professor at Harvard, foresees that Hamas will likely release a “couple of hostages” before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, but believes this won’t be sufficient to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He shared his thoughts on Newsmax on Sunday.

“They will be the Americans,” said Dershowitz on Newsmax’s “Sunday Report.” “That will be a kind of a homage to Trump, saying, All right, at least we’re releasing the Americans.”

However, Dershowitz emphasized that all hostages need to be freed, and the main objective for resolving the war must be to ensure that “this could not ever recur.”

He added that the United States, alongside the incoming Trump administration, cannot allow hostage-taking to influence policy decisions. “Israel has to be allowed and encouraged to continue with its victories against the enemies of democracy and the enemies of peace,” he said.

Dershowitz also expressed the belief that both Hamas and Iran fear the incoming president. “I think that the president-elect ought to tell Iran, Look, you have 60 days to dismantle your nuclear program, and if you don’t do it, we’ll do it,” he stated. “Threats from Donald Trump work.”

He noted that Hamas continues to escalate its demands due to a “false sense” of support from “useful idiots” who are protesting against Israel on American college campuses.

“These young men and women have blood on their hands, and we ought to make it clear that they are doing evil things by one-sided protests against Israel, without ever condemning Hamas,” he said. “Have you ever heard of a protester on any American campus calling for a two-state solution? You have not. That’s because they don’t want Israel to survive as the nation-state of the Jewish people. They want one state, a Palestinian state.”

On the matter of Trump’s approach to global issues, Dershowitz believes the president will be tough on groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran, as he “knows better than anybody” that diplomacy with such entities must be backed by the credible threat of military force. “Diplomacy alone will never work,” he asserted. “That’s why the Iran deal that was allowed by President Obama was a failure from the beginning because it rewarded Iran, it rewarded terrorism. It gave them billions of dollars to send to Hezbollah and Hamas. It’s a disaster.”

Dershowitz was also critical of President Obama’s foreign policy, declaring it as the “worst foreign policy presidency in modern American history.” He argued that Obama’s actions contributed to the conditions that led to the October 7 attacks and the subsequent hostage situation. “That has to be reversed, and President Trump can reverse that by being tough, by threatening the use of force … but if the diplomacy fails, he has no choice.”

Finally, Dershowitz emphasized that if red lines are crossed, “there must be force, tragic as it is, and as terrible as it is to use force,” adding, “Force is the engine of diplomacy and President Trump knows that as a negotiator, probably better than any prior American president.”
