Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida visited San Francisco on Tuesday and expressed his disappointment with what he witnessed in the city, which he described as a “once great city” that has now “collapsed” due to leftist policies. In a one-minute video released by his presidential campaign, DeSantis criticized the rampant drug use, public defecation, and boarded-up businesses he observed, attributing these issues to the city’s leadership and policies.
DeSantis emphasized the importance of policies and leadership, highlighting the contrast between San Francisco’s situation and the influx of people moving from the city to Florida in recent years. He mentioned the significant population loss in California and the significant population increase in Florida, particularly from predominantly blue states with high taxes.
The governor’s criticisms of San Francisco came in response to attacks from Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom of California, who has accused GOP policies of various shortcomings. Newsom has targeted Florida, claiming that it restricts LGBTQ+ rights, contributes to gun violence, harms migrants, and infringes on abortion rights.
DeSantis, on the other hand, has challenged Newsom and ridiculed his focus on Florida. He dared Newsom to enter the 2024 presidential race and urged him to stop evading the question. DeSantis dismissed Newsom’s claims and expressed his confusion regarding Newsom’s fixation on Florida, considering that DeSantis himself has not announced his candidacy for president and has endorsed President Joe Biden for reelection.
During a press conference in Fort Pierce, Florida, DeSantis playfully mocked Newsom and urged him to be more decisive about his political ambitions. He questioned why Newsom was avoiding a straightforward answer and encouraged him to challenge Biden directly in the 2024 presidential race.

Ron, first deal with the gangs in your home state before you campaign all over the place.
