Did Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz Buy Falafel Without Chummus?

A story on an Israeli website, Kikar HaShabbat, left readers scratching their heads.

The story features photos of a person the site identifies as Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz, who it says “is currently staying in Israel for Pesach.”

Shlomo Yehuda, of course, is the renowned philanthropist who resides in Los Angeles.

The site reports that Rechnitz was spotted in the afternoon at a falafel shop in Yerushalayim, ordering a falafel “without chummus.”

The store, the report says, is the Ben Yaakov falafel shop in the Shmuel Hanovi neighborhood in Yerushalayim.

The story states that “Rechnitz was wearing casual clothes standing alongside residents who were unaware that he is one of the noted philanthropists of the chareidi world.”

The story basically ends there, with the gist of it being that this noted baal tzedakah ordered falafel without chummus – with photos to prove that he was in the falafel shop.

rechnitzReaders are left confused as to the point of this report; a person’s falafel preferences would seem to be low on the totem pole of relevant news.

The bigger problem?

The person in the pictures is actually not R’ Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz. It is, in fact, R’ Shlomo Yehuda’s twin brother, R’ Yisroel Zev Rechnitz.

“Some might say that if you are going to report an irrelevant, and even silly, story, at least get the name of the person right, don’t you think?” wrote one person on social media.

  1. Um, they are identical twins.
More importantly, is Matzav complaining? That’s the biggest joke! Matzav has also done many tabloid things and providing all sorts of little details about trips etc.

  2. why do these sites to chase these nice people, everyone need not know each time they do something.
Matzav is just hock hock hock

  3. #DAVE?! Whats the point that kikar shabbos was trying to make that got you to post this ? i actually like and respect reb shlomo yehuda, just curious if im missing something…

  4. by the way that falafel shop was known for years as serving falafel without chummus you couldnt order a falafel with chummus there, they didnt have it. this is a fact

they may of changed their policy but until recently they had a no chummus for you policy

  5. People like to emulate successful people. So now if they eat falafel without Chumas bought at this store they may do the same.

Much hatzlacha to these special brothers

  6. What makes this story so much more horrible is that the twin, who actually is the main partner in their business is always sure to keep all his good deeds private. He was in Israel to bring his young children to har hamenuchos to visit their mother who passed two years ago. It was also reported that two cars blocked them from exiting the cemetery until all the schnorerrs got their feed. What kind of society have we turned into?

  7. Personally I recommend clear and proper Kovod to the Rechnitz family ( I do NOT know them by the way – would love to have that zchus…). They have been given the zchus by HKB’H to support Torah in great ways in this generation. They have “acted” on that Zchus. There are many wealthy people who do not. They should be treated with the kovod due to people who uphold Torah. Boruch Asher Yokum es Hatorah Hazos.

  8. why cant you news people leave these guys alone ,seriously i buy a falafel every time im in israel and dont make it to your headline, and these nice people should also be able to
