A letter sent by the community directorate of Yerushalayim’s Kiryat Yovel neighborhood to Mayor Nir Barkat indicated that the mayor is party to a policy of keeping chareidi schools out of the area and forcing kids to bus elsewhere.

Sent to Barkat by Chairman of the Education Committee Yishai Cohen and Chairman of the Neighborhood Directorate Ronny Sharon, the letter stated:

“The Yovelim area (Kiryat Yovel, Ramat Danya, Ramat Sharet, Menachat, Ein Kerem) and the south-west side of the town in general is pluralistic by character. It is important to preserve this character for the benefit of the city’s residents. Your policy in this matter is that no chareidi school should be set up in the Yovelim area in order to preserve this character. We support this policy.”

The letter went on to complain that Barkat’s colleagues were not fighting initiatives to set up a chareidi school in Kiryat Yovel.

In response to an angry chareidi reaction to the letter, the municipality said the letter was false and insisted, “The municipality has no discriminatory policy against this or any other community in the city.”
