A Russian airstrike that hit Kyiv’s main television tower in the heart of the Ukrainian capital today killed at least five people and injured another five, and also damaged the historic Babi Yar memorial, which serves as a mass grave containing 34,000 Jews who were murdered there in 1941 when the city was under Nazi occupation.

“To the world: what is the point of saying ‘never again’ for 80 years, if the world stays silent when a bomb drops on the same site of Babi Yar? At least 5 killed. History repeating,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is Jewish and had family members die in the Holocaust, wrote on Twitter.

Natan Sharansky, the Ukrainian-born chairman of the Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Center and former head of the Jewish Agency, said in a statement: “[Russian President Vladimir] Putin seeking to distort and manipulate the Holocaust to justify an illegal invasion of a sovereign democratic country is utterly abhorrent. It is symbolic that he starts attacking Kyiv by bombing the site of Babi Yar, the biggest of Nazi massacres. We, at the Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Center, built on Europe’s largest mass grave of the Holocaust, work to preserve historical memory following decades of Soviet suppression of historical truth, so that the evils of the past can never be repeated. We must not allow the truth to once again become the victim of war.”

  1. Shame on Matzav.

Stop repeating the Ukrainian propaganda comparing Putin to Hitler ym”s — There is no comparison— stop belittling the holocaust.

  2. Highly unlikely that he was aiming for Babi Yar. We can accuse him of desperate and inhumane actions without making up things.

  3. The Ukrainians were involved with the slaughter that took place there. Now they are trying to rub their hands in aidilkeit??? Pheh. A pox on both houses.

  4. Yes, when, in World War II, the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union, their southern thrust went through the region of the Ukraine. A very large part of the Ukrainian population liked the Nazis and joined up with them. These Nazis with their Ukrainian collaborators, Yimach Shemam V’Zichram, sadistically killed extremely many Jews, especially in the horrific blood bath at Babi Yar near Kiev, Hashem Yinakem Damam.

As the tide of the war turned, the Soviet forces began pushing the Nazi forces back more and their more and more until they pushed them all the way back to Berlin, which they then conquered at the end of the European war.

Even though the Nazi forces in general were expelled from the Ukraine area and the whole Soviet Union, significant numbers of them remained behind. While probably most of them and the Ukrainians who joined them are now deceased, most of the descendants of these Nazis and Nazi joining Ukrainians are probably right there in current day Ukraine. Along with them are many more people who, while not physical descendants, are strong adherents of that evil philosophy. So, current day Ukraine has significant Nazi groups who proudly bear the Nazi banners; it is removing them and putting them to death that President Putin states is one of the key goals of his invasion.
