The ongoing invasion in Ukraine has taken a heavy toll in multiple ways, and it is not just about the battlefields and bombed-out buildings. Before the year 2024, marriages in Ukraine outnumbered divorces by an astounding percentage rate. Let’s consider the statistics given in 2021 and 2023. The former says that over 214,000 couples tied the knot, while around 17,893 separated. Then, the divorce rate in 2021 was 8.36%.
Just to give you a glimpse, in the same period in 2023, over 186,000 couples got married.
What about divorces? The numbers speak for themselves. After the first year of the full-scale war, there were 24,108 official separations. So, the divorce rate in 2023 was 12.96%. As you see, two years have passed, and the marriage rate decreased by 13.08% while the divorce rate increased by 4.6%.
Aside from the number of marriages, Kyiv topped the charts in divorces, with 3,793 breakups registered last year. Approximately 16% of divorces registered with registry offices were in the capital alone.
