Nearly 62 years after the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy, newly released documents confirm that a CIA operative had interactions with Lee Harvey Oswald both before and after the event. The disclosure, first covered by Axios, points to long-speculated connections between U.S. intelligence and the man accused of killing the president.
The papers focus on George Joannides, a CIA officer with a background in psychological operations. A key piece of evidence is a January 17, 1963 memo, which identifies an alias—“Howard Gebler”—as belonging to Joannides. Along with the alias, he held a fake driver’s license under that name. Prior to this week’s disclosure, the CIA denied any connection between Joannides and “Howard.” Joannides had been linked to anti-Castro Cuban activists operating at the time of Kennedy’s murder.
For years, the CIA insisted it had no involvement with the Cuban Student Directorate, also known as the DRE, the organization that circulated Oswald’s pro-Castro articles in the wake of the assassination. That stance has now been undercut. “The cover story for Joannides is officially dead. This is a big deal. The CIA is changing its tune on Lee Harvey Oswald,” said Jefferson Morley, a journalist and longtime researcher of the assassination.
Joannides worked out of the CIA’s Miami office, which oversaw political manipulation and psychological tactics during the Cold War. The CIA secretly funded and guided the DRE, which actively opposed Fidel Castro’s regime. In August 1963, four DRE members confronted Oswald in New Orleans while he was handing out pamphlets on behalf of the “Fair Play for Cuba Committee.” Shortly after, Oswald and DRE representatives debated on local television, giving wider attention to his communist sympathies. Both the scuffle and the broadcast were dramatized in Oliver Stone’s JFK film.
Although these revelations do not challenge the Warren Commission’s conclusion that Oswald acted alone, identifying Joannides as “Howard Gebler” casts more doubt on the full transparency of the government’s version of events.
In March, President Donald Trump issued a directive for the full release of all remaining classified records tied to the assassinations of President Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. The order fulfilled a longstanding promise by Trump, who stated, “I have determined that the release of all records in the Federal Government’s possession pertaining to each of those assassinations is also in the public interest.”

Three months after President John F. Kennedy said “I would like to splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it into the winds” he was shot. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know who was behind the assassination.
