The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has canceled contracts worth over $180 million in just two days, including one for nearly $170,000 to create an exhibit dedicated to Anthony Fauci.
“In the past 48 hours, HHS canceled 62 contracts worth $182 million,” The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) revealed in a social media update on Friday. “These contracts were all for administrative costs – none were related to healthcare programs. This includes halting a $168,000 contract for an Anthony Fauci exhibit at the NIH Museum.”
This move follows recent efforts by DOGE, led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, to implement significant reforms in government spending. Among these changes are plans to shut down the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and introduce major reforms at the U.S. Treasury Department, aimed at cutting over $100 billion annually in entitlement benefits for individuals without a Social Security number.
No federal agency appears to be exempt from DOGE’s scrutiny, with HHS now added to a growing list of departments being targeted for cost-cutting measures to reduce inefficiency in the federal government.
The Fauci exhibit, which had been slated to open by July 2025, has been canceled along with the elimination of $182 million in other administrative expenses from HHS.
Fauci has been a polarizing figure throughout his career, frequently at odds with former President Donald Trump. Last month, Trump rescinded a taxpayer-funded security detail that had been granted to Fauci in 2020 as part of his role as the public spokesperson for the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I think, you know, when you work for government, at some point your security detail comes off and, you know, you can’t have them forever,” Trump remarked on the decision. “We took some off other people, too, but you can’t have a security detail for the rest of your life because you work for government.”
On his last day in office, former President Joe Biden issued a pardon for Fauci, shielding him from potential retribution from Trump in the event of a second term. Despite this, Fauci was never charged with any crimes at the time the pardon was granted.
Fauci’s career included nearly three decades as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 1984 to 2022. Prior to his role during the COVID-19 pandemic, he began his tenure at the National Institutes of Health in 1968.
