Shatha al-Sabbagh, a 20-year-old Palestinian journalist and student, was tragically shot and killed by Palestinian gunmen on Sunday, yet her death has largely gone unnoticed, especially when compared to the outcry following the death of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in 2022, who was killed by Israeli forces.

In May 2022, Shireen Abu Akleh, a journalist with Al Jazeera, lost her life while covering violent confrontations between Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Palestinian terrorists during an Israeli operation to apprehend a Palestinian terror suspect. Unlike several of her colleagues at Al Jazeera who had links to militant groups, there was no indication that Abu Akleh had such ties.

Abu Akleh’s tragic death sparked global outrage, with constant references to her in press briefings at the White House and State Department. By contrast, al-Sabbagh’s passing has largely been ignored on the international stage.

The Times of Israel reported the following: “Shatha al-Sabbagh, a young journalism student and independent reporter, was struck by a bullet to the head, which her family claimed came from a Palestinian security forces sniper, despite no fighting being reported in the area. However, the Palestinian Authority’s security forces attributed the shooting to local Palestinian militant groups, stating she was killed during clashes at the Jenin refugee camp.”

Her family issued a statement on Sunday calling it a “heinous crime,” accusing the Palestinian Authority’s security forces of being directly responsible for the killing: “She was killed by a sniper’s bullet from the security forces of the Palestinian Authority in a heinous crime. As the family of martyr Shatha al-Sabbagh, we hold the Palestinian Authority and its security forces directly responsible for this crime.”

The world’s starkly different response to the deaths of al-Sabbagh and Abu Akleh is particularly clear in that even President Joe Biden mentioned Abu Akleh in his prepared remarks in 2022.
