The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) announced on Tuesday that it would be offering buyout packages to its employees, similar to the ones extended to millions of federal workers in the past. According to reports, these buyouts would provide CIA staff with approximately eight months’ worth of pay and benefits if they choose to resign.

The administration reportedly decided to offer the buyouts as part of a broader initiative to align the CIA more closely with the priorities set by President Trump, as noted by the Wall Street Journal.

This same buyout package had been offered to over 2 million civilian federal workers last month, although individuals with national security roles were exempt from the offer.

Federal employees have until 11:59 p.m. Thursday to decide whether to accept the buyout offer, with the Office of Personnel Management making it clear that the offer will not be extended beyond that time. It remains unclear whether CIA staff members are subject to the same deadline.

Additionally, the CIA has decided to halt hiring and is reviewing any pending job offers to ensure that they are in alignment with the agency’s new priorities, which include efforts to combat drug cartels and counter China’s influence. This was revealed by an aide to CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who spoke to the Wall Street Journal.

The agency is also focusing more on the Western Hemisphere and plans to target countries that have not traditionally been seen as U.S. adversaries, according to the aide. Furthermore, the aide mentioned that under President Trump, the CIA could leverage espionage to help secure better trade deals with the Mexican government and combat the Mexican drug cartels.

Ratcliffe, who is 59 years old, had reportedly asked the White House to offer the buyout package to the CIA in the hope of making the agency more aggressive in its operations.

A CIA spokeswoman told the Journal that the buyouts were intended to bring a “renewed energy” to the agency.

It is still uncertain whether other agencies within the U.S. intelligence community will offer similar buyout packages to their employees.

    • You’re right because it was in fact Trump who offered a buyout to the entire CIA workforce and not how the media reported it.
