Dr. Nochum Tzvi Friedman z’’l

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the tragic passing of Dr. Nochum Tzvi (Richie) Friedman z’’l. He was 55 years old.

Dr. Friedman, a longtime leader of Hatzolah, was killed when he was hit by a car while en route to his home after davening in shul on Shabbos morning.

Dr. Friedman, a devoted Bobover chossid, was a resident of the Cedarhurst, NY, community, but his chesed and activism reached well beyond the environs of his local area. Dr. Friedman was among those who established Hatzolah in Manhattan, serving both the West Side and East Side communities there, in addition to devotedly serving at the helm of Hatzolah in New York as a medical director and as paramedics director of Rockland Hatzolah.

Dr. Friedman was renowned for his selflessness and altruism, opening his heart to one and all. His passing has plunged his family, friends and admirers into mourning.

Dr. Friedman was an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the Icahn Mount Sinai College of Medicine. His expertise included treatment of obesity, gastroesophageal reflex disease, hernias, appendicitis, gallbladder disease, and benign and malignant diseases of the colon.

Dr. Friedman worked with Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center and South Nassau Communities Hospital.

For nearly two decades, Dr. Friedman led his practice in Manhattan. He later opened a  second location in Lawrence in the Five Towns.

Dr. Friedman was a fourth generation physician, as son of Dr. Ira Friedman, a surgeon at Beth Israel for six decades.

A passionate advocate for patients, Dr. Friedman was the founder and medical director of the Heritage Initiative at Beth Israel Medical Center, whose primary goal is to promote cultural sensitivity to the Jewish community.

The levayah will take place on Sunday, at 1 p.m., at Yeshiva Darchei Torah, located at 257 Beach 17th Street in Far Rockaway.
