It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Dr. Yisroel (Elliott) Samet z”l. He was 69 years old.

Dr. Samet was the leading pediatrician in Passaic, NJ, a beloved doctor who for decades devoted himself to the klal and the yochid. Prior to living in Passaic, Dr. Samet resided in Detroit, where he was a prominent member of the community, forging an especially close kesher with Yeshiva Gedolah Ateres Mordechai and its roshei yeshiva, Rav Yehuda Bakst and Rav Meir Simcha Bakst.

Dr. Samet had a tremendous lev tov and, with his ever-present smile and constant good cheer, performed chassodim continuously. There was nothing he would not do for another.

Always ready with a good vort to share, Dr. Samet possessed remarkable ahavas Hashem and chashivus haTorah. His dikduk b’mitzvos, as well, was an example to others.

Dr. Samet was a stalwart supporter of Agudas Yisroel of America and a beloved presence each and every year at the Agudah Convention.

Dr. Samet was zocheh to marry off his daughter, Zahavah, just a couple of months ago, meriting to see all his children to the chupah. In fact, in appreciation to the Ribono Shel Olam for the zechus of marrying off his last child, Dr. Samet wished to be mekabel upon himself a dovor tov, and he thus started wearing Rabbeinu Tam tefillin as a demonstration of his hakoras hatov to Hakadosh Boruch Hu for all the chesed that He bestowed upon him. This provides a small glimpse into the type of person Dr. Samet was, a ben aliyah who lived with highest ideals of Torah, avodah and gemillus chassodim.

Now, his family and his many friends and the many people who loved him have been plunged into mourning, having lost a gem of a person, whose goodness radiated to all who were fortunate to know him.

May Dr. Samet be a meilitz yosher for his wife, Mrs. Tobi Samet, and their wonderful family of children and grandchildren following in his ways.

Yehi zichro boruch.

Yitsy Kleinman & Family shared the following with us:

Dr. Samet, you were always there for your patients at all times of the day. From the simplest to the most complicated cases you would never rest. You were there 1,000% of the way to make sure the children of the Passaic/Clifton community were cared for.

Your legendary smile on your face, your beautiful voice and your sense of humor kept everyone smiling.

Your encouraging words when times were hard always brought a smile and a sense of calm to your patients. You always stressed safety, yet giving your patients the encouragement for the jobs they were doing as parents.

We will never forget the lines in your house/office of all the people going through hard times. Your financial help to countless people was done quietly, never requesting fame.

You were a true tzaddik in every form.

May you be a meilitz yosher for Klal Yisroel and your gansa mishpacha.

  1. One Shabbos my family was in Passaic for a simcha and my young child who had a blood disorder, began to bleed. We knocked on the good doctor A”H’s door in the middle of his Shabbos seudah and he took us in, then walked with us to a nearby hospital and performed a difficult blood draw to determine if the situation was critical. It was not easy for him and took him away from his family for several hours, but he did it as if it was the most natural thing, not a hint of it being the least bit of a imposition. Yehi Zichro Boruch

  2. Dr Samet was a tremendous person.
Before he moved to Passaic he was a doctor in Detroit for many years. He had a very close shaychos with the Bakst mishpacha and displayed exceptional ahavas and yiras talmidei chachomim. My heart is broken from the news of his petirah.

  3. He treated thousands of children in Passaic/Clifton with יראת שמים ואהבת ישראל. He should be a מליץ יושר for all of us. יהא זכרו ברוך.

  4. My chaver ztz’l had the zechus to host HaRav and Reb. Dovid Feinstein Shlita for the Rosh Yeshiva’s family bris. I asked the Dr. ztz’l whether he would be mekabel Shabbos early that week? The Dr. laughed and said – “I never mekabel Shabbos early – what would be the point”? He took emergency calls for children right up to the zman. Every week. How many times a father pulled him out of shul on Leil Shabbos; Yom Shabbos. His office on Motzei Shabbos – even in the Summer would look like a Tuesday afternoon – crowded with people for all hours. An irreplaceable Yid with a sever panim. BD’E.

  5. a true oved Hashem for many many years. a real ohev Rabbanan. he lived with emunah and helped anyone he just could. he lived in a different dimension and lived and did for the sake of Heaven. he had an uncanny siyata dishmaya almost like a mofes in his regular holoch yelech.

  6. There are no words to accurately describe Dr. Samet, z”l. He was so kind and loving and ready with a smile for everyone. He always went above and beyond for the cholim. He treated my children for the past 12 years. I remember after biyur chometz, only a couple of hours before pesach 9 years ago, we called him about one of m y children. He said, no problem, come on over. He took such joy in seeing all his patients dressed up on Purim. We always started mishloach manos giving by going to his house first where he would give them a toy. His eishes chayil would take pictures of the kids with Dr. Samet and then they would hang them in the waiting room. Whenever one of my kids were sick, they loved looking at ther picture on the wall. We are all grieving. May his neshama have an aliyah.

  9. What could be added to all that already has been written. He was not only a gem. He was not only a doctor. He was not only a talmid chochom. I knew him as a friend and a Rebbe of one of his sons. I taught Hascholas Gemara and in order for the fathers to learn with their children the way we learned in class, I would give a shiur one night a week to prep the fathers that wanted it. Doc would be spending nights in the neonatal unit in Detroit, but he made sure to call in to the shiur landline to landline and take an active role in his son’s chinuch. I davened next to him in shul. I heard him blow shofar and not make a single mistake. I looked forward to his Simchas Torah visits back to our shul. He was one of a kind. truly a mentsch in every sense of the word. I will miss you. You brought the world so much simcha. Yehi Zichro Boruch.

  10. Eybersther! can’t you let people live and still accomplish whatever it is that you have in mind? Why must these families live the rest of their live sin pain. So hard. The Kol Yachol! Al zeh davah libeinu .oy

  11. I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to Dr. Samet’s family. As the former chief information officer of St. Mary’s Hospital, I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Samet on many information technology initiatives. I found him to be very passionate to the mission of St. Mary’s Hospital and committed to providing exceptional care to his patients. Losing this brilliant physician is a great loss to the Passaic community.
