The leader of the Syrian jihadist rebel faction “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham,” Abu Mohammad al-Julani, declared early on Sunday that his forces had “completely liberated” Homs, Syria’s third-largest city, from the control of the Assad regime. He urged his fighters to spare the lives of Syrian soldiers who choose to surrender their weapons.
Reports from Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV mentioned that an Israeli airstrike had targeted the Al-Qusayr crossing along the Syria-Lebanon border, a vital smuggling route for Hezbollah in Lebanon, shortly after the rebels captured the area. Israel has warned the Syrian rebel factions that the Israeli Defense Forces will respond with full force if any rebel units attempt to cross into Israeli territory or breach the 1974 armistice line.
In response to the situation unfolding in Syria, the IDF has deployed additional aerial and ground forces to the Golan Heights, commanded by Division 210, which operates along the Syrian border. According to Bloomberg, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad reached out indirectly to US President-elect Donald Trump, seeking assistance to preserve his grip on power. Through the United Arab Emirates, Assad proposed severing ties with Iran and its allies in exchange for Western support to ensure his continued rule. Assad has also made appeals to Hungarian President Viktor Orban, arguing that Syria’s Christian minority is under threat and urging Orban to leverage his influence to persuade Trump to intervene.
On Saturday, the Syrian rebels made their way into Homs and advanced toward the outskirts of Damascus, with reports indicating that the rebels have gained control over some of the city’s suburbs. Assad has dismissed claims that he fled the city, despite reports suggesting that his wife and children had escaped to Russia. A source familiar with the situation told CNN that the presidential guard had withdrawn from Assad’s palace in Damascus.
Rebel sources reported that they had seized control of the central prison in Homs on Saturday evening, releasing hundreds of prisoners. Local residents claimed that Syrian government forces were retreating from the city. Additionally, several Hezbollah Radwan Force terrorists fled Homs after a joint decision with the military, as the city was deemed indefensible.
Earlier, President Trump made it clear that “The United States should have nothing to do with” the ongoing Syrian civil war. “This is not our fight. Let it play out. Do not get involved!”
Turkey continues to back certain rebel factions, while Russia and Iran maintain their support for Assad.
