The Egged driver of Bus 402 that crashed into a truck on Israel’s Highway 1 on Sunday, killing six passengers, has been released by police, who, after speaking to the driver’s lawyer, agreed to grant him 21 days of house arrest.

As a condition of release, the driver’s mother will have to look after him, and he gave a deposit of seven thousand shekels, with a commitment of NIS 10,000, and his passport was taken from him.

Police will attempt to press charges during the days of house arrest. There is suspicion that the driver was negligent, and there are possible charges of obstruction of justice after the accident, when the driver is said to have manipulated the black box device on the bus.

The head of traffic police, Yaron Be’eri, said that “the behavior of the driver is not normal.”
