milchigsMany have the minhag to eat a milchige meal (and milk and honey) on Shavuos. Some eat milchig at night and fleishig at the day meal, while others eat milchig, bentch, and then wash again, and eat fleishig to be yotze Simchas Yom Tov with meat. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 494:3

-If one eats milchig but not “hard cheese” (which requires one to wait six hours before eating meat) one need not bentch and wash again before eating meat. However, one should wash his /her mouth well and the tablecloth should be changed. (Other poskim require one to bentch). Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 494:3, Piskei Tshuvos 494:12

  1. This milchige business is a myth! It’s says very clearly: AIN SIMCHA ELA BIBASAR VIYAYIN! Stop looking for shtusim taavos!

  2. It’s no accident that eating dairy originated as an Ashkenazic custom. In Europe there was a great supply of milk at this time in the spring and everyone, both Jews and non-Jews, used to use it for their holiday meals (non-Jews had the Christian holiday of Whitsuntide) and in as many ways as they could so it would not go to waste.

  3. #1 sorry that you never heard about the Rema in siman 494. plus the Chazzan ish ate a milchige only seuda at night, while r’ elyashiv eats a milchige only seuda by day.

  4. Until about 30 yrs. ago a seudas bris consisted of fleishigs. In fact, some Chassidishe Rebbes still insist on meat. Nowadays dairy is de reguer.

  5. Harvey Time,

Actually it’s only Yayin that is important today. We don’t have Shelamim. You’d be advised to read the Biur Halacha on this.
