Education Secretary Betsy DeVos resigned tonight, blaming President Donald Trump for rhetoric that fueled the “unconscionable” violent invasion of the U.S. Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters. DeVos is the second member of Trump’s cabinet to quit because of the riot Wednesday, which flooded the halls of Congress, postponing the confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.

In a letter to Trump, which said she would leave office Friday, DeVos listed what she said were the successes she and Trump had in education policy. “We should be highlighting and celebrating your Administration’s many accomplishments on behalf of the American people,” DeVos wrote. “Instead, we are left to clean up the mess caused by violent protestors overrunning the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to undermine the people’s business,” she wrote. “That behavior was unconscionable for our country. There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is an inflection point for me.”
