swine-flu7Egypt began slaughtering the roughly 300,000 pigs in the country today as a precautionary measure against the spread of swine flu even though no cases have been reported here yet, the Health Ministry said. The move immediately provoked resistance from pig farmers. At one large pig farming center just north of Cairo, farmers refused to cooperate with Health Ministry workers who came to slaughter the animals and the workers left without carrying out the government order. “It has been decided to immediately start slaughtering all the pigs in Egypt using the full capacity of the country’s slaughterhouses,” Health Minister Hatem el-Gabaly told reporters after a Cabinet meeting with President Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt’s overwhelmingly Muslim population does not eat pork due to religious restrictions. But the animals are raised and consumed by the Christian minority, which some estimates put at 10 percent of the population.

Health Ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman estimated there were between 300,000-350,000 pigs in Egypt.

Agriculture Minister Amin Abaza told reporters that farmers would be allowed to sell the pork meat so there would be no need for compensation.

In 2008, following fears over diseases spread by animals, Mubarak ordered all pig and chicken farms moved out of population areas. But the order was never implemented.

Pigs can be found in many places around Muslim world, often raised by religious minorities who can eat pork. But they are banned entirely in some Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Libya.

In Jordan, the government decided today to shut down the country’s five pig farms, involving 800 animals, for violating public health safety regulations.

  1. With the loss of a supply of 350,000 pigs we can be assured that the demand will only increase. Very simply economic principle… Now that means lucrative opportunity for who? Israeli pig farmers. Location Location Location! I wouldnt doubt if we read in the next year that the government of Israel is financing the growth of pig farms in Israel to meet the demand. Is it wrong if I celebrate the 61 years with a pork chop? any one want to join me?

  2. oh and yes I am being facetious about the pork chop! But under my mocking tone is very serious concern for Jews and the Chillul Hashem that may arise out of this change in the pork market.

    Dear Ms. Ingrid Newkirk:

I, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, have taken the monumental task of shielding the Egyptian people from the dangers of porcine influenza. I have therefore ordered all 300,000 pig residents of my country slaughtered. I have allowed to Christian residents of Egypt to eat the pork, though, because frankly I don’t care if they all die of swine flu. I do realize, though, that this decision may pain you, so I have taken the liberty to forewarn you so that you might evacuate the poor swine.

    Sincerely,
    President Hosni Mubarak

    Dear Mr. Mubarak:

I am completely disgusted that you would entertain such a horrifying thought! How could you so mercilessly annihilate all those innocent pigs?! There should be a fatwa out against you, by Allah! It is better that all the people of the world should die of swine flu rather than touch the hair of an innocent animal.
